Part A- All about Eve Flashcards
Motifs
The mirror is a reoccurring idea in the film, and is significant in the end where Phoebe steals Eve’s trophy and looks herself in the mirror. Starting her dream to rise to stardom like Eve. Phoebe says she wants a trophy “More than anything else in the world”, includes background theme music.
Low-angle shot of Addison
Addison says: “I’m Addison Dewitt. I’m nobody’s fool, least of all yours.” High angle shot showed Addison to be dominant, more powerful and intimidating. Low angle shot showed Eve to be vulnerable and weak compared to Addison.
Addison tells Eve: “You’re no champion, your stepping way up in class.”
Music
Music accompanies actions on the screen, which creates a mood. For example, when Margo sits with the pianist at the party, the sad song creates sense of sorrow and sympathy for Margo. Reflecting Margo’s insecurities.
When Eve meets Karen
The lighting in the alleyway creates a sense of mystery and eeriness around Eve when Karen talks to her. This attempt for the director to create eeriness links to Eve trying to get close with Margo to fulfil her own desires and aspirations.
Close up shots
Eves hand shot demonstrates the young and old theme in the film. Speaker says “Such young hands”. The close up shot of the trophy with Eve’s name on it shows she has achieved her dream- the highest honor and gone to youngest.
When celebrating Eve winning the award
Margo and Karen were the only people in the audience that were not clapping, because Eve took advantage of them and manipulated them to achieve her dream. On the way to Eve’s rise in stardom, she had Karen’s marriage and peace of mind threatened. Margo was also disrupted by Eve, such as when Eve attempts to seduce Margo’s lover Bill Sampson and get closer to him.
Still shot and reaction shot- Airport
When Bill Sampson is leaving the airport and kisses Margo, the camera shows Eve on the side and standing there. Eve looks down with a jealous expression on her face. This shows Eve’s plans to manipulate Margo and her lover Bill to get where she wants to be and be part of plays.
Sampson’s birthday Eve plans
Eve plans Bills birthday without telling Margo. She pretends that she forgot to tell Margo. Eve tells Margo: “As a matter of fact, I sent him a telegram himself.” This is accompanies with background music that gets louder and louder. This expresses Margo finding Eve’s true personality and motives. Eve also closes the door and straight away without letting Margo to respond.
