group interview
interview in which researcher gathers data from more then one participant
different kinds of groups used in qualitative research
consensus panel, focus group, natural group, community interview
consensus panel
they are a group of experts that are all together for an open discussion about a product or service
focus group
sampling criteria. seeks a broad range of ideas on open-ended topics. formal and controlled
natural group
exists independently of the research study. can be formal (social research) and informal ( ethnographic data)
COMMUNITY INTERVIEW
large segments of the community ( project planning)
consensus panel
- Delphi groups: participants do not meet, emailed a questionnaire
- nominal group technique: a group of people with an interest in the area to generate and rank ideas
- consensus conferences: workshop or discussion groups where participants come to a consensus through debate and interaction
naturalism
the more natural a group discussion is, the harder it is to collect data
planning group interview studies
- Sampling: how many groups to include
- Selecting participants: what kind of group interview, how many to include in each group, how are participants contacted.
- recruitment strategies:
- incentives: travel expenses
- topic guide: structured interview schedule for the discussion
