Part 6: Effect Of Temperature On Enzymes Flashcards

1
Q

How does low temperature affect enzymes?

A

Low temperature results in the molecules having less kinetic energy, so there are fewer collisions and, therefore, fewer chemical reactions. By increasing the temperature, kinetic energy and collisions will increase, so the rate will increase up to the optimum temperature.

Q

How does high temperature affect enzymes?

A

High temperature will denature the enzyme by changing the shape of the active site, which means the substrate can’t bind. Therefore, the reaction rate decreases when the temperature exceeds the optimum temperature.
