Redistricting
The redrawing of congressional and other legislative district lines following the census, to accommodate population shifts and keep districts as equal as possible in population
Gerrymandering
The drawing of legislative district boundaries to benefit a party, group, or incumbent
Unitary state
An internal government of a state that places most power in the hands of central government officials
Federal state
An internal organization of a state that allocated most powers to units of local government
Compact state
A state in which the distance from the center to any boundary doesn’t vary significantly
Elongated state
A state with a long, narrow shape
Perforated state
A state that completely several surrounds another state
Fragmented state
A state that included several discontinues pieces of territory
Porpupted state
An otherwise compact state with a large projecting extension
