Origin: Anterior surface of the femur and the anterior side of the medial and lateral intermuscular septa
Insertion: Tibial tuberosity via the patellar ligament
Action: Extends the knee; Rectus Femoris flexes the thigh
Innervation: Femoral nerve (L2-L4)
Blood Supply: lateral circumflex femoral a., deep femoral a.
Rectus Femoris
Origin: Anterior superior iliac spine
Insertion: Tibial tuberosity via patellar tendon
Action: Extension of the knee, flexion of the hip
Innervation: Femoral nerve (L2-L4)
Blood Supply: Lateral circumflex femoral a.
Vastus Medialis
Origin: Linea aspera and medial supracondylar line of femur
Insertion: Tibial tuberosity via patellar tendon
Action: Extension of the knee
Innervation: Femoral nerve (L2-L4)
Blood Supply: Medial circumflex femoral artery
Vastus Intermedius
Origin: Anterior and lateral surface of the femur
Insertion: patella
Action: Extends the leg
Innervation: Femoral nerve (L2-L4)
Blood Supply: Lateral circumflex femoral artery
Vastus Lateralis
Origin: Intertrochanteric line, greater trochanter, and linea aspera of femur
Insertion: Tibial tuberosity via patellar tendon
Action: Extension of the leg
Innervation: Femoral nerve (L2-L4)
Blood Supply: Lateral circumflex femoral artery
Sartorius
Origin: Anterior superior iliac spine
Insertion: Medial surface of the tibia (pes anserinus)
Action: Flexion, abduction, and lateral rotation of the thigh at the hip joint; flexion of the leg
Innervation: Femoral nerve (L2-L4)
Blood Supply: Lateral Femoral Circumflex a., Saphenous a.
Semimembranosus
Origin: Ischial tuberosity
Insertion: Medial condyle of tibia
Action: Flexion of the leg , extension of thigh
Innervation: Tibial nerve (L5-S3)
Blood Supply: Branches of the popliteal artery
Semitendinosus
Origin: Ischial tuberosity
Insertion: medial surface of tibia (via pes anserinus)
Action: Flexion of the leg, extension of thigh
Innervation: Tibial nerve (L5-S2)
Blood Supply: Branches of the popliteal artery
Biceps Femoris
Origin: Long head: Ischial tuberosity; Short head: Linea aspera of femur
Insertion: Head of the fibula and lateral condyle of tibia
Action: Flexion of the knee, extension and lateral rotation of the hip
Innervation: Long head - Sciatic nerve and Tibial nerve; (tibial portion) (L5-S2); Short head - Common fibular nerve (L5-S2)
Blood Supply: Branches of the popliteal artery and perforating branches of the deep femoral a.
Adductor Longus
Origin: medial portion of the superior pubic ramus
Insertion: Linea aspera of femur
Action: Adducts, flexes, and medially rotates the femur
Innervation: Anterior division of Obturator nerve (L2-L4)
Blood Supply: Obturator artery, Deep femoral a.
Adductor brevis
Origin: inferior pubic ramus
Insertion: Pectineal line and linea aspera (deep to the pectineus and adductor longus mm.)
Action: Adducts, flexes, and medially rotates the femur
Innervation: Anterior division of the obturator nerve
Blood Supply: Obturator a., Deep Femoral a.
Adductor Magnus
Origin: Inferior pubic ramus, ischial tuberosity, and ischial ramus
Insertion: Linea aspera and adductor tubercle of femur
Action: Adducts, flexes, and medially rotates the femur; extends the femur
Innervation: Obturator nerve (anterior part - L2-L4, posterior part - L4-S3)
Blood Supply: Obturator a., Deep Femoral a., Medial femoral circumflex a.
Adductor Minimus
Origin: Lower portion of the inferior pubic ramus
Insertion: Gluteal ridge and upper part of the linea aspera of the femur
Action: Adducts and laterally rotates the femur
Innervation: Posterior division of the obturator nerve
Blood Supply: Obturator a., Deep Femoral a., Medial femoral circumflex a.
Gracilis
Origin: Pubic symphysis and the inferior pubic ramus
Insertion: Medial surface of the tibia (pes anserinus)
Action: Adduction of the thigh at the hip joint, Flexes and medially rotates the thigh and flexion of the leg.
Innervation: Obturator nerve (L2-L4)
Blood Supply: Obturator artery
