Q

Describe differences between arteries and veins.

A

Arteries:
-carry oxygenated blood away from the heart
-pressure is much higher bc hear is pumping it away
-thick walls, muscular layer

Veins:
-carry deoxygenated blood towards heart, pressure is lower
-rely on valves to move blood through and upwards, prevent backflow
-thinner walls, closer to surface of body

Q

Circulation types:
(a) systemic
(b) pulmonary
(c) coronary

A

(a) carries oxygenated blood away from heart
(b) carries deoxygenated blood away from heart to lungs, back to heart
(c) provides heart with oxygenated blood via arteries and veins that supply heart muscle

Q

What is ph?
What does hydrogen do in the body?

A

-potential hydrogen
-measure of the amount of hydrogen ions determines acidity or alkalinity
-more acidic=more hydrogen ions
Hydrogen balances alkalinity and acidity in the body.

Q

Describe the phospholipid bilayer

A

-membrane that separates a cell from its environment
-made of two layers of phospholipids
-hydrophilic heads exposed to extracellular matrix
-hydrophobic tails pointed inward
