Part 2 - Chemicals in our food Flashcards
What is a functional group?
a group of atoms responsible for the characteristic reactions of a particular compound.
How does placing a carbon-carbon double bond affect chemical reactivity?
Carbon-carbon double bonds increase chemical reactivity.
What is functional group approach?
The functional group approach “works” because the properties and reaction chemistry of a particular functional group (FG) can be remarkably independent of environment.
Based on their properties it can be predicted what happens to chemicals in certain situations
How do we identify functional groups in a molecule?
Generally speaking they usually involve atoms other than carbon and hydrogen, such as oxygen and nitrogen, and/or multiple bonds like the carbon-carbon double bond,
What are alkenes?
compounds that contain carbon-carbon double bonds
Indeed, the functional group names are often reflected in the specific chemical name of a particular organic compound, as shown in Figure 2.3 – for example, alkenes always have the ending –ene.
What is the structural formula of the alcohol containing two carbon atoms?
The structural formula of the alcohol containing two carbon atoms, ethanol.
Attached to a carbon atoms is a hydroxide atom
What are the monomers used to make proteins called?
amino acids
