On an airfield, what does ATC stand for?
Air Traffic Control
Where is the Airfield/Aerodome Controller located?
Glass walled room at top of control tower
What does the Airfield/Aerodome Controller do?
Supervises traffic on the ground and aircraft in local circuit
Where is the Approach Controller located?
In radar room
What does the Approach Controller do?
Controls aircraft leaving area and making instrument approaches
Where is the Runway Controller located?
Red and white squared caravan
What does the Runway Controller do?
Controls individual runway
What is RT?
Radio Telephony for ground-to-air communications, using VHF or UHF on different frequencies
What is DFTS?
Defence Fixed Telecoms Systems, links together all units and stations via phone
How are Helicopter Operating Areas marked?
Large letter H, 4 metres high and 2 metres across
How are Stationary Hazards are marked?
Three side yellow object on a pole
What is DRDF?
Digital Resolution Direction Finding
What is ILS?
Instrument Landing System
What are DRDF and ILS used for?
To help airfield approach and landing
What is PAR?
Precision Approach Radar
What are Airways?
Imaginary tunnels in the air, 10-20 nautical miles across, marked by radio navigation beacons
What is the rule for Rights of Way for the four main aircraft types?
Balloons have precedence over everything
Gliders have precedence over Airships and Powered aircraft
Airships have precedence over Powered aircraft
Powered aircraft give way to the others
If two aircraft approach head on, what action must be taken?
They both turn to the right
If two aircraft are on converging course, what action must be taken?
The one which has the other on the right has to give way
If to starboard, port appear, ‘tis your duty to keep clear
If an aircraft is being overtaken, who has right of way?
The overtaken aircraft
Where is the light on a balloon at night?
Somewhere below the basket… (anyone know?)

What is the clock code to locate aircraft?
12 o’clock is dead ahead
6 o’clock is directly behind
3 o’clock is 90 degrees to the right
9 o’clock is 90 degrees to the left
What extra information usually added to the clock number to locate aircraft?
High, Level, or Low
eg 6 o’clock High = directly behind and above
How is bad ground indicated on an airfield?
White canvas with red band, yellow/black solid, yellow flags or squares
