Mean length of utterance
The amount a character speaks/average length of their utterances
Mode of address
The names characters call each other and the way they address each other
Adjacency pairs (disrupted)
Sets of responses that go together eg question/answer (when disrupted a question may be followed by another question)
Ellipsis
A gap in time sometimes indicated by … Or […]
Cataphora
The use of a pronoun to introduce a character before the noun has been used
Symbolism
The use of a concrete object to represent something abstract (eg an idea or a person not present)
Tableau
A freeze frame that creates meaning through the use of a still image on the stage
Protagonist
The central character in a play
Antagonist
The opposing force to the protagonist
Tragic hero
From the Greek form of theatre, must have a fatal flaw (hamartia) which causes his fall from high to low status.
Characterisation
The writer’s technique of creating a character through various literary or dramatic approaches
Diametrically opposed characters
Characters who possess opposing qualities, presented in a way that asks us to compare and contrast them
Static character
One who does not undergo change during the course of the play
Dynamic character
One who undergoes change during the course of a play
