The concept that is being discussed/analyzed throughout the entire essay
Main idea
To find main idea:
- Have the topic
- Be a complete sentence by itself
- Be a sentence that summarizes the details of the paragraph
Main idea can be a:
Thesis Statement or Topic Sentence
Thesis Statement:
- refers to the idea of the whole text
- presents or describes the point of the text
- usually presented in the abstract or found at the last part of introduction
How to locate Thesis Statement
- read title
- read first few paragraphs
- check conclusion
- check purpose statement
Signal phrases that announces the purpose of the text
Pupose statement
Topic sentence:
- presents or describes the point of the paragraph
- can be located at the beginning, middle, or last part of a paragraph
How to locate Topic Sentence
- read first sentence of a paragraph
- browse the sentences in the paragraph
- identify purpose of the paragraph
Considered as skeleton or backbone of an essay
Outlining
What are outlining used for
Used in organizing thoughts before writing it down and to highlight key ideas
Types of outline
Formal and Informal Outline
Follows a format and is more rigid
Formal Outline
- drafts or scratch that needs constant revisions
- doesn’t follow a format
- uses bullets, stars, etc…
Informal Outline
- arranges one’s idea heirarchically
- alphanumeric outline is commonly used (roman numerals)
Topic outline
An outline that uses text written in full sentences
