Part 1: Relief and rock types Flashcards
What is physical geography?
the study of natural things e.g. rocks, glaciers, coasts, rivers
What is relief?
how high the land is
What are the highest points?
mountains and ridges
What are the lowest points?
valleys and other low-lying areas
What does brown indicate on a relief map?
highest land (over 400m)
What does yellow indicate on a relief map?
upland areas between 200-400m above sea level
What does green indicate on a relief map?
low land and flattest parts of the land between 0-200metres above sea level
What is a sedimentary rock?
Rock made up of pieces of other rocks
- How are sedimentary rocks formed?
a) Small pieces of rock are transported to the sea.
b) They settled at the bottom of the sea.
c) Layers build up and they get squashed together (cementation).
d) Sedimentary rock is formed.
- Which rocks are sedimentary?
a) sandstone, chalk and clay
- What is a metamorphic rock?
a) Rocks created by pressure from below the earth
- How are metamorphic rocks formed?
a) Rocks in the earth are heated and put under immense pressure
b) They do not melt but the minerals are changed chemically
c) Metamorphic rock is formed
- Which rocks are metamorphic?
a) slate and marble
- What is an igneous rock?
a) Rock from volcanoes
- How is igneous rock formed?
a) Inside the earth is molten (liquid) rock.
b) This is called magma.
c) When magma cools it solidifies and becomes hard rock.
