What is the difference between the “Internet” and the “Web”?
The internet is a global network of networks.
The Web (short for world wide web) is a service that links files across computers. It is a software system built upon the hardware of the internet.
What do the terms “Information Society” or “Network Society” refer to?
They refer to the major developments taking place in technology - it is a term such as the “industrial revolution” but to describe current times
What does the term “Knowledge Society” mean?
It refers to the way that new information systems can transform human society e.g. the way we learn, the way we listen to music
What is “SMS” and why is it becoming less used?
SMS is short messaging services which is what mobile networks use - often called texting. It is becoming less used due to the introduction of Instant Messaging Apps on smartphones such as WhatsApp which use online communication.
What areas of Business has technological development changed now we live in a digital world?
- Banking, using ATM’s and online
- Shopping, online rather than high street
- Manufacturing, automation of production
- Data Centres, business storing and distributing data
What areas of Communities, Information and Entertainment has technological development changed now we live in a digital world?
- Forums and discussions online are common place
- Social Networking is used to share information about ourselves
- Television is often downloadable and can be easily copyrighted
What security risks have arisen from the digital world?
The state now have much more access to data of individuals. In the past they would not have had photos, retina prints, face ID’s etc. but even going through an airport much of this is handed over. All this information is a risk to being lost or stolen.
What does the term “Digital World” mean?
It refers to the impact of computers and technology on the world.
