- cotton boom in the 1800s
- southern america supplying cotton worldwide
- slavery boomed in response to the increase in demand
- slavery is being justified with the phrase “necessary evil”

A
- increased transportation and selling of slaves from upper south to lower south to supply the increased demand for slaves
- very brutal and cruel process

Missouri Compromise - why? what? effects?
A
- missouri tried to enter the Union as a slave state
- alarmed the northeners
- COMPROMISE: Missouri enters as a slave state, but maine also enters as a free state => KEEPS A BALANCE
- COMPROMISE: a line across Louisiana territory and slavery is allowed below and not allowed above
- Effects: temporary solution and almost caused a civil war; increasing tensions

- storm hit and uprising was postponed
- slaves told masters about the plan
- Gabriel and slaves were executed
