Missouri Compromise - why? what? effects?

  • missouri tried to enter the Union as a slave state
  • alarmed the northeners
  • COMPROMISE: Missouri enters as a slave state, but maine also enters as a free state => KEEPS A BALANCE
  • COMPROMISE: a line across Louisiana territory and slavery is allowed below and not allowed above
  • Effects: temporary solution and almost caused a civil war; increasing tensions
