Q

Why do the diseases which people die from differ from Australia to underdeveloped countries?

A

The quality of living conditions and healthcare systems, people in underdeveloped nations do not live to older ages where heart and lung diseases come into play, instead dying to other diseases at a younger age because the risk of infection is highly increased

16
Q

How do we interact with pathogens in daily life?

A

We come into contact with pathogens every day, most of the time our body’s immune system destroys them before they can cause harm

17
Q

What are the three factors which determine whether an exposure to a pathogen results in infection?

A

Dose, virulence and host resistance

18
Q

What is dose?

A

The amount of organisms that enter your body

19
Q

What is virulence?

A

The strength of the organism

20
Q

What is host resistance?

A

The ability of your immune system to fight infection

21
Q

What are bacteria and how many species are there?

A

Microscopic, unicellular organisms, there are thousands of species

22
Q

What types of bacteria do we contain and which bacteria causes disease?

A

We contain good and bad bacteria and pathogenic bacteria can cause disease

23
Q

What can bacteria be treated by?

A

Antibiotics

24
Q

What are examples of diseases caused by bacteria?

A

Whooping cough, salmonella, tetanus and tuberculosis

25
Q

What can barbed wire cause?

A

Deep puncture wounds which allow the bacterium which causes tetanus to enter the body

26
Q

What are viruses?

A

The smallest known pathogen, and are non-living

27
Q

What do viruses contain?

A

A fragment of genetic material encased in a protective protein coat

28
Q

What do viruses do?

A

Reproduce inside host cells and damage the cell, before taking over and making thousands of copies

29
Q

What happens to the host cells when viruses enter?

A

They burst open and viruses are passed out in the bloodstream, airways and other routes

30
Q

What are some diseases caused by viruses?

A

Influenza, colds, measles, chicken pox and HIV
