What is Interprofessional Collaboration?
It is patient centered teamwork.
Useful for patients with complex medical, social, economic, or other problems.
It is used to solve problems and reach decisions about management of the patient.
The teal collaborates, coordinates and communicates to help the patient effectively fulfill goals or needs.
What is Professional Collaboration?
A/K/A Co-Treatment
Used in professions that have levels or types of caregivers (ex PT/PTA)
The assistant functions with direction, guidance, and, in some situations, direct supervision by the more responsible or primary caregiver.
Cooperatively established roles and activities each professional will perform.
In a professional collaboration, what is the primary caregiver’s role(s)?

What are the procedures of patient orientation?
- Introduce yourself: name & professional designation
- Verify patient ID (at least 2 identifiers)
- Confirm patient info (dx, purpose of tx, etc)
- Interview patient
- (PT only) - assess, exam, eval, dx
- (PT only) - Set goals / functional outcomes
- Inform patient of tx plan & techniques (include risks, adverse affects)
- Encourage questions
- Informed consent (oral or written)

Having the right to consent to or reject treatment.
What are the elements of informed consent?
Description of condition, dx, or eval data/info
Proposed/recommended tx plan, techniques or procedures
Primary, known, anticipated, or potential risks, complications, precautions associated w/the proposed tx
Expected prognosis or outcome of the proposed tx (w/out guarantee of results)
Alternative forms of tx
Thorough/honest responses to patient questions
Potential or possible consequence of no tx (if refused)
Documentation of consent prior to tx (or refusal)
