Part 1 Flashcards
Cell to Cell Communication
Essential for multicellular organisms to survive and function
Communication is accomplished by chemical means
Direct Signaling
Physical Contact
Could also involve passage from plant cell to plant cell through plasmodesmata
Local Signaling
Growth factors are released into a localized area
Long Distance Signaling
Hormones-released into one part of the body to travel to another part of the body
Pheromones-chemical mate attractants released into the environment
Signal Transduction Pathway
Reception, Transduction, Response
Reception
Molecule binding to membrane receptor protein
Transduction
A series of steps in the changing of the signal to something the cell can understand at the nucleus or in the cytoplasm
Response
Involves making something or turning on/off an enzymatic process.
Involves DNA transcription and translation or enzymes inside the cell
Ligand
Actual signal molecule
Ligand binds to the receptor protein on the cell membrane or inside the cell
Attachment causes a conformational change in the receptor protein
Different ligands=different response
