Part 1 Flashcards
What is an Atom?
An Atom is the simplest particle of an element that can exist on its own.
Name 5 Properties of Metals
Shiny Hard Higher Melting points Malleable Conducts Electricity
Name 5 properties of non-metals
Not Shiny Brittle Lower Melting points Non-Malleable Does not conduct Electricity (Graphite is an Exception)
What is a Molecule?
A molecule is two or more Atoms Joined together
What is a Compound?
A compound is a material that is made up of 2 or more different elements that are chemically joined together
Which elements make up Magnesium Oxide?
Magnesium and Oxygen
How do you make Magnesium Oxide?
Burn Magnesium in air
What do you Observe when Making Magnesium Oxide?
A bright White light
What is the equation for Magnesium Oxide?
Magnesium + Oxygen = Magnesium Oxide
Which Elements make Iron sulphide?
Iron and Sulfur
How do you make Iron Sulphide?
Heat the mixture of Iron and Sulfur
What do you observe when making Iron Sulphide?
The Mixture Glows
What does Iron Sulphide look like?
Iron Sulphide is a Black Solid
What is the Equation for Iron Sulphide?
Iron + Sulfur = Iron Sulphide
What is a Mixture?
A Mixture is 2 or more Substances mixed together that are easy to separate
Appearances of Metals
Iron - Grey, Shiny, Solid
Sulfur - Yellow, dull powder
Iron Sulfur Mixture - Grey flecks with Yellow Flecks
Iron Sulphide - Dark Grey Solid, Not Shiny
Name the first conclusion
Different Elements have different Properties. In a mixture, the Elements behave as if they were on their own. A compound is a new material that has its own properties
Name the second conclusion
You cannot Predict the properties of a compound by looking at the properties of the elements that are used to make it
What is an Element?
An Element is a material that cannot be split up into anything Simpler. An Element contains only 1 type of Atom
