Allegory
A story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted into a hidden meaning
Alliteration
The occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent of closely connected words
Allusion
An expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly
Ambiguity
The multiple meanings, either intentional or unintentional, of a word, phrase, sentence, or passage
Analogy
A similarity between two different things and the relationship between them
Anaphora

A short narrative detailing particulars of an interesting episode or event

The word, phrase, or clause referred to by a pronoun
Antithesis
A contrast or opposition between two things

A concise statement of a scientific principle
Apostrophe
A figure of speech that directly addresses an absent or imaginary person or a personified abstraction, such as liberty or love
Asyndeton
Consists of omitting conjunctions between words, phrases, or clauses
Chiasmus
An inverted relationship between the syntactic elements of parallel phrases
Colloquial/colloquialism
The use of slang or informalities in speech or writing
Connotation
The non literal, associative meaning of a word
