Part 1 Flashcards
What are the first 5 key concepts?
1) cells are compartmentalised
2) cells become specialised
3) Cells are dynamic (change shape, move, active)
4) Cells are social - interact and coordinate
5) Cells are robust
Define robustness.
The ability of a cell to maintain performance and function on internal and external perturbations.
What is fault tolerant?
Ability to tolerate faults.
How are cells fault tolerant?
They have multiple proteins - multiple versions of the same enzyme
e.g different caspases for apoptosis to break down cell components
What is gene knockout?
One by one move a gene from the cell
see what happens after to see how important the gene is to the cell
What does it mean if there are redundancies in cells?
No longer useful or working
