The bridge between home and society.

Values which are specific to the group/individual.

Values which apply to everyone in society.

Being someones family member.
What is achieved status?
Being judged on own performance.
- This links to meritocracy as they earn their position in society rather than being born into it.
Why should schools premote individualism rather than collectivism?
It prepares them to sacrifice collective bonds for career progression.
What is the hidden curriculum?
Knowledge and skills that are implicit such as being rewarded, bring punctual, confroming -> through sanctions and rewards.
How is achieved status gained?
Assessments, these are valued to get into uni.
What encourages individualism?
Competition between students, this is shown in the USA through Valivictorian status -> pepares for working life.
What is a contemporary example of controlling the bridge between home and society?
School uniform polices - sanctions for not conforming.
What is a contemporary example of enforcing universal standards?
Disciplinary polices of schools - being late or disruptive are sanctioned/given isolation.
What do marxists argue? (limitation)
The hiddern curriculum prepares students for exploitation as values of lower classes are neglected.
What do postmodernists argue? (limitation)
They disagree with universal values as society is fragmented and individuals choose their values.
- Due to multi-cultrual + media saturated society the passing on of norms and values within schools are diluted.
