What is an ascribed role and an achieved status?
Ascribed role- your status in society is given to you eg brother and sister
Achieved role- We achieve our status in school which is similar to work life. If you work hard you will gain status just like work e.g. Doctor and lawyer

School is the main place where we are taught societies values and norms
What’s a Criticism of facial socialising agency?
Interactionalists- We all have free will however Parson makes humans seem like puppets but in fact students are not socialised the way schools wants
What is particularistic values?
The values we are judged upon by our parents as we are previewed the best
What is universalistic values?
Values judged open by schools so everyone is treated equally and have equal chances to succeed
What is the argument against particularistic and universalistic values?
School should be there to teach children to do well for there work like not values of society
What it meritocratic principles?
The idea that the education system is fair and equal and has the same chance to get a good grade. This then leads to role allocation.
What’s the criticism of meritocratic principals?
Schools are not meritocratic as factors such as gender, class and ethnicity play apart in teachers views
What is role allocation?
You are judged on ability and then you will get the job you wish based on that ability e.g. Someone good at maths will get a job in accounting
What’s a criticism to role allocation?
Academic credentials don’t relate to income as some people get horrible grades but still achieve a good income
