Parotid, Etc, Regions Flashcards
What is the temporal region ?
It includes the lateral area of the scalp and the deeper soft tissues overlying the temporal fossa of the cranium, superior to the zygomatic arch
Borders of temporal region
Posteriorly and superiorly = temporal lines
Anteriorly = the frontal and zygomatic bones
Laterally = the zygomatic arch
Inferiorly = the infratemporal crest
Where does the temporalis muscle arise from ?
The floor
What is the infratemporal fossa ?
It is an irregular shaped space deep and inferior to the zygomatic arch, deep to the mandible, and posterior to the maxilla
Boundaries of the infratemporal fossa ?
Laterally = the ramus of the mandible
Medially = the lateral pterygoid plate
Anteriorly = the posterior aspect of the maxilla
Posteriorly = the tympanic plate and the mastoid and stylish process of the temporal bone
Superiorly = the inferior surface of the greater wing of splendid
Inferiorly = where the medial pterygoid muscle attaches to the mandible near its angle
What are the contents of the infratemporal fossa ?
1) inferior part of the temporalis muscle
2) lateral and medial pterygoid muscles
3) maxillary artery
4) pterygoid venous plexus - mandibular, inferior alveoli, lingual, buccal and chorda tympani nerves
5) optic ganglion
Parotid region ?
It is the posterolateral aspect of the facial region
Boundaries of the parotid region
Superiorly = zygomatic arch
Posteriorly = external ear and anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid
Medially = ramus of the mandible
Anteriorly = anterior border of the massager muscle
Inferiorly = angle and Inferior border of the mandible
Contents of the parotid region ?
1) parotid gland and parotid duct
2) the parotid plexus of the facial nerve
3) the retromandibular vein
4) the external carotid artery
5) the masseter muscle
Contents of parotid gland ?
From superficial to deep ;
1) the parotid plexus of the facial nerve and its branches
2) the retromandibular vein
3) the external carotid artery
4) the parotid lymph nodes
Clinical correlations of parotid region
1) parotid tumor
2) parotid duct stenosis - abnormal narrowing of the parotid duct
