What are the 3 levels of government?

A

In government there is the federal, state and local government. federal provides protection, immigration and currency. State is in charge of road rules, schools, hospitals and police. Local is important for sporting grounds, rubbish and planning permits

What is an electorate?

A

An electorate are the 150 areas across Australia that make up the parliament. The person voted to be in charge of each electorate is now a member of the house of representatives.

A

The federal government’s lower house is the house of representatives and upper house is the senate. The state’s lower house is the legastive assmebly and upper house is legastive council.

What is the house of representatives?

A

The h.o.r is the lower house of Federal government and they determine the goverment and pass laws. There are 150 seats in the house of representatives that are made up of each member of an electorate. The colour of h.o r is green

What is the senate

A

The senate is the upper house of federal government and they discuss matters of national and international importance. 12 senators represent each state and there are 76 seats . Their colour is red.

A

Democracy is a form of government where the people have a say in what laws are passed. Australia have a representative democracy which means voters elect representatives to government.

A

An election is a process that takes place every 3 years where voters can elect people to represent thier electorate in parliament, specifically the h o r. Senators are elected every 6 years

How does our voting system work?

A

Australia makes voting compulsory for everyone and we use a preferential voting system. This means that we vote in order of preference.

Who can vote

A

Since Australia makes voting compulsory, everyone has to vote. Once you turn 18 and are an Australian citizen you have to vote. People cant vote if you are in prison for over 3 years or living in a current address for under a month

A

The opposition leader is the leader of the party with the minority in the house of representatives. The role of the opposition includes commenting on decisions made by the government

What the difference between the front beach and back benchers

A

Front benchers tend to be ministers with portfolios and have a more important role in parliment where as back benchers are very important and don’t have much responsibility.

A

The nationals are a smaller party that is a coalition with the liberal party. They were formed in 1918 by farmers to look out for the interests of people in rural australia. The leader of the nationals is currently barnaby joyce

A

Our current governor general, peter cosgrove is the queens representative. He also summons the prime minister to form the government. The g g sits at the top of the parliamentary triangle

A

The constitution is a written statement outlining the structure of our laws. It provides a framework for the operation of government. The formal title of our constituion is the common wealth of australia constitution act.

What is a representative democracy?

A

A representative democracy is when voters elects representatives to government to represent thier views in parliment. Since we have 14 million people that have to vote, having a representative democracy makes it much easier to make a descisoon

What is a referendum

A

A referendum is are changes to the constitution and must be put to vote for all australian voters. To pass a referendum the bill must ordinarily achieve a double majoirty. This means 4 out of the 6 states must agree

A

A government is a political system where groups of people have the authority to govern our states and country. The role of government is to provide the country with protection, order , justice and public work
