What are the 3 levels of government?
In government there is the federal, state and local government. federal provides protection, immigration and currency. State is in charge of road rules, schools, hospitals and police. Local is important for sporting grounds, rubbish and planning permits
What is an electorate?
An electorate are the 150 areas across Australia that make up the parliament. The person voted to be in charge of each electorate is now a member of the house of representatives.
What are the two houses in federal and state?
The federal government’s lower house is the house of representatives and upper house is the senate. The state’s lower house is the legastive assmebly and upper house is legastive council.
What is the house of representatives?
The h.o.r is the lower house of Federal government and they determine the goverment and pass laws. There are 150 seats in the house of representatives that are made up of each member of an electorate. The colour of h.o r is green
What is the senate
The senate is the upper house of federal government and they discuss matters of national and international importance. 12 senators represent each state and there are 76 seats . Their colour is red.
What is democracy
Democracy is a form of government where the people have a say in what laws are passed. Australia have a representative democracy which means voters elect representatives to government.
What is an election
An election is a process that takes place every 3 years where voters can elect people to represent thier electorate in parliament, specifically the h o r. Senators are elected every 6 years
How does our voting system work?
Australia makes voting compulsory for everyone and we use a preferential voting system. This means that we vote in order of preference.
Who can vote
Since Australia makes voting compulsory, everyone has to vote. Once you turn 18 and are an Australian citizen you have to vote. People cant vote if you are in prison for over 3 years or living in a current address for under a month
Who is the prime minister
The prime minister is the leader of the political party with a majority in the h. O . R. They are summoned by the governal general to form a government. Our current prime minister is malcom turnboll
What is the opposition leader
The opposition leader is the leader of the party with the minority in the house of representatives. The role of the opposition includes commenting on decisions made by the government
What are the ministers?
The ministers are members of the party with a majoirty in the h or r. Each minister has a area of responsibility eg. Minister of immigration or health. These are known as a portfolio
Role of independant
A person who is not a member endorsed by a political party. They can be elected but cannot form a
Government
What the difference between the front beach and back benchers
Front benchers tend to be ministers with portfolios and have a more important role in parliment where as back benchers are very important and don’t have much responsibility.
What is the national party?
The nationals are a smaller party that is a coalition with the liberal party. They were formed in 1918 by farmers to look out for the interests of people in rural australia. The leader of the nationals is currently barnaby joyce
