What is Parliamentary Government?
Parliamentary Government is defined by the relationship between the legislative and executive branches of government.
What is the role of the legislative branch of government?
The legislative branch (or legislature) is the law-making branch of government, responsible for debating and approving proposed laws.
What is the role of the executive branch of government?
The executive branch is responsible for administering and enforcing laws passed by the legislature.
What is meant by a bicameral legislature?
A bicameral legislature consists of two houses: the upper house and the lower house. It is the lower house that holds the most power.
What is meant by a unicameral legislature?
A unicameral legislature consists of a single chamber.
What are the components of the executive branch of government?
The formal executive, the political executive and the administrative executive.
What is meant by the political executive?
The political executive is commonly referred to as the government of a parliamentary state, more specifically the Prime Minister and his or her Cabinet.
What is the role of the administrative branch of government?
The administrative government is commonly referred to as the bureaucracy. It interprets and implements laws, and also delivers a range of public services, such as the postal service or food safety inspections.
What are some effective checks on the power of majority governments?
Adverse PUBLIC OPINION may lead to abrupt policy reversals. The NEWS MEDIA may spur the government to action to avoid public embarrassment. Governments are also subject to the limitations imposed by the COURTS AND CONSTITUTION.
