Bill finished First reading Second reading Committee stage Report stage Third reading The House of Lords Royal assent
What happens in the first reading?
The title of the bill is read to the house of commons
What happens in the second reading?
Proposals are fully debated and the MPs vote on whether to proceed
What happens in the committee stage?
There is a detailed examination of the bill - at this point amendments can be made
What happens in the report stage?
The committee reports back to the House and a vote is taken after expects in the subject of the act are consulted
What happens in the third reading?
The bill is represented to the house and a vote is taken
