Parkinson's Disease Flashcards
Lewy Bodies are?
clumps of protein in the surviving dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra
what is global cerebral ischema?
people that have experienced an interruption of blood to their entire brains
what is retrograde transneuronal degeneration?
spreads from damaged neurons to the neurons that synapse on them
what is anterograde transneuronal degeneration?
spreads from damaged neuron to the neurons on which they synapse
What is retrograde degeneration?
the degeneration of the proximal segment
What is anterograde degeneration?
the degeneration of the distal segment
what is a distal segment?
the segment of a cut axon between the cut and the synaptic terminal
what is a proximal segment?
the segment of a cut axon between the cut and the cell body
What does early degeneration indicate?
that the cell will die
which cells are influential for degeneration?
glial cells
What was the MPTP?
a synthetic type of heroin which caused Parkinson’s disease
What are the important aspects of Parkinson’s and the brain?
the substantia nigra, lewy bodies and dopamime
Why is Parkinson’s hard to treat?
it is a progressive developmental disease
What is the major correlate of Parkinson’s disease?
a reduction of dopamine in the substantia nigra and striatum
Why does L-DOPA not give a solution to Parkinson’s disease?
because it becomes less and less therapeutically effective with use.
