Kwashiorkor
Malnutrition caused by laconic protein intake while consuming adequate energy.
Symptoms: swollen belly, hair loss, full cheeks, muscle weakness, poor growth. Potential brain damage.
Marasmus
Malnutrition caused by a lack of energetic intake. Not enough kilocalories.
Symptoms: Extreme thinness, skin seems to hang from bones, children do not grow. Potential brain damage.
Refeeding

Reintroduce nutrients slowly
Give additional potassium, phosphorous, and magnesium daily.
Perform complete nutrition assessment with careful estimation of nutritional needs.
Monitor weight and fluid balance.
Effects of Starvation
How long does take to use up glycogen stores during starvation?
After 25 hours what is the prime source of glucose?
After the breakdown of muscle or torn for energy, what other sources become more available?
8-12 hours (glycogen is stored in liver and retrieved as needed for energy)
