Parenteral
Means outside of the GI tract. It refers to medications that are injected into the body. The action is more rapid.
Indications
- inability to swallow
- decreased level of consciousness
- inactivity of the drug by gastric juices
- a desire to increase the effectiveness of the drug
- presences of nausea and vomiting
Intramuscular
within muscle–maximum of 3 ml per site

What is the technique for IM
Wear gloves, cleanse area, flatten area with thumb and finger, Insert with dart like action, 90 degrees into mucles, aspirate, inject and remove, do not recap, apply pressure and gentle massage with alcohol prep.
