Parathyroid Basics Flashcards
What is the basic patho function of the parathyroid gland
Parathyroid gland secretes produces parathyroid hormone that increases calcium in the blood by sequestering it from bones, increased reuptake from kidneys, and increases calcium absorption from the blood
Calcium binds to calcium sensing receptors
Vitamin D decreasing PTH
What is the effect of fibroblast growth factor on PTH
Decreases it
What is chronic PTH exposure effect on bones
Increased cells, osteoblast, and osteoclast activity
Increased bone remodeling
In long term exposure cytokines take over osteoclast activation
What is calcitonin
A hormone that counteracts PTH
Mainly stops osteoclast activity and increases renal clearance
Causes of hypercalcemia
Hyperparathyroidism
Cancer
Vitamin D toxic action
Hyperthyroidism
Prolonged immobilization
Renal failure
