Pediculosis is a
Infestation of Lice
Pediculosis humanus capitis
Head lice
Pediculosis humanus corporis
Body lice
Pediculosis pubis
Pubic lice or crabs
Pediculosis Clinical Manifestations
- Intense pruritus (May l/t secondary excoriation/infection)
- Tiny, red, noninflammatory lesions
- Eggs (nits) of head & body lice often attached to hair shafts
- Public lice often spread by sexual contact
Pediculosis Tx:
- Permethrin 1% liquid (Nix)
- Pyrethrin compounds (Rid)
Permethrin 1% liquid (Nix): Pt Edu
-Effective against nits & lice w/ just 1 application
Steps:
1. Shampoo hair
2. Leave Nix on hair for 10 mins
3. Rinse off
-May repeat in 7 days
*When shampooing hair, use a fine-tooth comb or tweezers to remove remaining nits
Pyrethrin compounds (Rid)
For pubic & head lice
Scabies is
A skin infestation by Sarcoptes scabiei mites
Scabies Clinical Manifestations
- Intense itching, esp @ night
- Burros are seen, esp btwn fingers, on surfaces of wrists, & in axillary folds
- Redness, swelling, & vesicular formation may be noted
Scabies Tx:
Permethrin 5% cream (Elimite)
Permethrin 5% cream (Elimite): Pt Edu
Steps:
- Apply cream to skin from heat to soles of feet
- Leave on for 8 to 14 hrs
- Wash off
* Only 1 application needed
Home Care:
- All fam members & close contacts need to be treated for parasitic disorders
- Bedding/clothing should be washed/dry-cleaned
- Furniture/rugs should be vacuumed/treated
- Seal nonwashable items in plastic bags for 14 days
Life span of Lice
- Can survive up to 48 hrs
- Nits can hatch in 7-10 days when shed in environment
