Parasitic diseases of fish Flashcards
Key element in fish disease.
stressors
* chemical
* physical
* biological like population density
* management stressors (like hauling)
fish lose what electrolyte in stress
chloride
factors in fish culture that favor parasites
low flow
high ammonia
high nutrient levels
white spot disease of fish
or ichthyophthiriosis which is caused by Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, a parasitic ciliate.
- one of the most prevalent fish diseases.
- scale scrape onto microscope slide to diagnose
costiosis (fish disease) is also known as
ichthyobodosis
flagellate ichthyoboda
- do microscopic exam with skin scrape
- tx with e.g. formalin bath
hexamitiosis is caused by
3 spp. of flagellated protozoan Hexamita
causes anorexia, emaciation, abdo distension.
- morbidity 100%
- mortality can also rise up to 100%
Tx with metronidazole, magnesium sulphate or carbarsone (antiprotozoal).
whirling disease is also called
black tail disease, caused by myxozoan parasite called Myxobolus cerebralis.
causes whirling movements, skeletal malformations, black coloration at posterior body.
- produces parasitic spores
Calcium oxide kills them.
gill flukes cause what disease
dactylogyrosis caused by monogenetic trematodes.
characterized by respiratory infestation.
tx with various baths
* sodium chloride bath
* mebendazole
* acetic acid
* formalin
gyrodactylosis caused by
small, less than 1 mm, monogean ectoparasite, Gyrodactylus salaris
lives on the skin of freshwater fish
PKD in fish
proliferative kidney disease caused by myxozoan parasite tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae
causes swollen kidneys and spleen
lethal to juvenile fish.
tx: no vaccines. do temp. control.
digenea metacercaraia are
eye flukes, common trematodes.
1700 spp. infect fish
argulosis is caused by
crustacean spp. of family Argulidae
cause loss of scales, skin fissures, wound margin hyperplasia
piscicolosis is caused by
parasitic fish leech Piscicola geometra
only attached to fish for feeding
