Parasitic Diseases Flashcards
Coelzoic Infection
in organ cavities - blood vessels, urinary bladder, kidney tubules, gut lumen
Histozoic Infection
muscle, connective tissue, bone, cartilage, epithelium, scales, nerves, viscera
Three phases of Cnidaria life cycle
- Trophozoite (ameoba-like) 2. Myxospores 3. Actinomyxon
Endoparasite
parasite that lives inside host (stomach, blood, muscle)
Exoparasite
parasite that lives on the host’s body
Definitive Host
host where the parasite’s sexual reproduction occurs
Intermediate Host
host which is normally used by a parasite in the course of its life cycle and it may multiply asexually but not sexually
Transport/Paratenic Host
a host that is not necessary for development, but may maintain the lifecycle of the parasite
Accidental Host
a host that has a parasite that is not normally parasitic to that particular species
Specialist parasite
infects only one host species as the definitive host
Generalist parasite
infects several host species as the definitive host
Direct (monoxenus)
parasite transmitted directly from one definitive host to another
Indirect (heteroxenous)
parasite transmitted to one or more intermediate hosts before the definitive host
microparasite
too small to see with human eyes; reproduce within host cells; usually viruses, bacteria, fungi, and some protists
macroparasite
large enough to be seen with human eyes; grow in one host but reproduce by infective stages outside host; crustaceans, helminths
