What are the external parasites?
Fleas, Ticks, Lice and Mites
What are the internal parasites?
Roundworm, Hookworm, Tapeworm, Fluke, Nematodes and Protozoa
What can fleas transmit?
Tapeworms, Plaque and Bartonella
What is the lifecycle of a flea?
Hatch in 2-3 days, larvae and pupae for 5-10 days and an adult for 1-2 months
What is the lifecycle of a tick?
Adult drops off host and lays several thousands of eggs then dies, eggs hatch into larvae and attached to a host, larvae drops off host and molts into nymph, nymphs attach and feed on lgr. host, nymph drops off turns into adult. etc..
What are some signs of fleas?
Scratching, biting, sores and flea dirt
Ticks carry bacteria that can transmit what disease?
Lyme
What are some signs of ticks?
Itching, irritation, redness and finding them on body
What are some signs of lice?
Scratching, hair/coat damage and visible nits
What are some signs of ear mites?
Dark, crusty, coffee ground looking debris and very itchy
What are some signs of skin mites?
Very itchy, scratching, sores, hair loss and skin discoloration
What are the 2 types of mange?
Sarcoptic and Demodectic
What are some symptoms of mange?
intense itching, hair loss/bald spots and swollen feet
Where do the mites live if a patient has Sarcoptic Mange?
Mites burrow under the skin
Where do the mites live if a patient has Demodectic Mange?
Mites live in the hair follicle
