Paraphrasing Flashcards
paraphrase
one’s own rendition of info and ideas expressed by someone else, presented in A NEW FORM
Why is paraphrasing a good thing
-it places boundaries on how much we quote (which can be excessive and shows laziness on the part of the writer)
-forces you to grasp and reexplain the full meaning of the text
Bad paraphrase
-close to original (same words, same form, even if condensed)
-sources not properly cited (needs to be parenthetical citation)
How to paraphrase well
-cross out information that isn’t necessary for the main idea
-underline key words in the main idea
-use different words, put ideas in a new form
what is summarizing
-restate the main points of the source in your own words
-condense information only into a few sentences
-paraphrase is more expansive, still gives important details
