Parametric Hypothesis testing Flashcards
What two values does probability lie between?
0 and 1
- 1 - 10% chance
- 5 - 50% chance
What does the P value represent?
the probability of getting the observed result if the null hypothesis is true
what does a p value of 0.01 mean?
there is a 1% chance/probability of getting the observed result if the null hypothesis is true
What requirements must be met to carry out an independent t test?
- dependent variable that is continuous - interval/ratio level
- independent variable that is categorical - two groups
- independent groups
- random sample of Data from the population
- normal distribution of dependent variable for each group
- no outliers
- homogeneity of variance
What are an independent t common applications?
- comparison of two groups
- e.g. treatment vs control
roughly what percentage of the population falls in the normal distribution of 1, 2 and 3 SD’s?
- 1 sd - 68.3%
- 2 sd - 95.4%
- 3 sd - 99.7%
What requirements must be met to carry out a paired samples t test ?
- dependent variable that is continuous - interval/ratio level
- related samples/groups
- Random sample of data from population
- Normal distribution of the difference between the paired values
- no outliers in the difference between two related groups
What is the non parametric alternative for an independent and paired samples t test?
independent t test - Maan-Whitney U test
dependent / paired samples - Wilcoxon
