Paramedic Vocabulary Flashcards
Corticosteroid
Anti-inflammatory synthetic hormones
Glucocorticoid
Glucocorticoids aresteroid hormones produced from the cortex of adrenal glandshave a pivotal role in the glucose, protein, and fat metabolism of the body.
Hypertonic solution
A hypertonic solution isany external solution that has a high solute concentration and low water concentration compared to body fluids. In a hypertonic solution, the net movement of water will be out of the body and into the solution.
Anticholinergic
Anticholinergics are substances that block the action of the neurotransmitter called acetylcholine at synapses in the central and peripheral nervous system. These agents inhibit the parasympathetic nervous system.
Cyclic guanosine monophosphate
Cyclic guanosine monophosphate(cGMP) is acyclic nucleotidederived fromguanosine triphosphate(GTP). cGMP acts as asecond messengermuch likecyclic AMP. Its most likely mechanism of action is activation of intracellularprotein kinasesin response to the binding ofmembrane-impermeablepeptide hormonesto the external cell surface.[1]Through protein kinases activation, cGMP can relax smooth muscle.[2]cGMP concentration in urine can be measured for kidney function and diabetes detection.[3]
Mydriaisis
Dilating pupils
Nuerolepric
A drug that depresses nerve functions
