Parallel Resistive Circuits Flashcards
What will happen to total current if a new resistive branch is added in a parallel circuit?
It will increase.
What will happen to total resistance if a new resistive branch is added in a parallel circuit?
It will decrease
What will happen to the voltage drops across the original resistors if a new resistive branch is added in a parallel circuit?
They will all be the same as before.
When adding to the resistance of one resistor in parallel, what happens to the total resistance of the circuit?
It will increase.
What happens if a resistive branch in a parallel circuit is shorted out?
The current will skyrocket and hopefully an over-current device will stop the flow of electricity.
What is a parallel circuit?
A circuit where current has more than one path to flow.
In a parallel circuit can the total resistance be more than any one branch resistance?
No it is always less than the lowest branch.
How could one find the total resistance of a parallel circuit?
Take the reciprocal of the sum of the reciprocals of the resistive branches.
What is Kirchoff’s current law?
The algebraic sum of currents entering and leaving a junction point in a closed circuit is 0.
What happens if a resistive branch in a parallel circuit burns out?
The branch is effectively removed from the circuit, source current will decrease and total resistance will increase.
What is the current divider principle?
An inverse proportion established by equating two parallel resistive branches together, having an equal voltage drop.
