Paragraph Quick Answer Flashcards
1
Q
What are acids and bases and how do they relate to the pH scale
A
- Acids, when (aq), release hydrogen ions (H+)
- Bases, when (aq), release hydroxide ions (OH-)
- If a product has more H+ than OH-, it is acidic (pH 0 - 7)
- If a product has more OH- than H+, it is basic (pH 7 - 14)
- If a product has the same amount of H+ and OH- it is neutral)
2
Q
Explain the reason behind balancing chemical equations
A
- Equations need to be balanced to follow the law of conservation of mass
- Equation would not make sense if one side did not yield the other
3
Q
Law of conservation of matter
A
Matter cannot be created or destroyed. It can only change forms
4
Q
Neutralization reaction
A
acid + base –> salt + water
- hydrogen ions (H+) mix with hydroxide ions (OH-) and neutralize each other out, resulting in a pH of 7
5
Q
Electrolyte
A
Electrolytes are ions that dissolved in water. After disassociating, from their original state, they are able to conduct electricity and have created an electrolytic solution
