Paragraph 4 Flashcards
What are the main changes that have contributed to large scale deforestation?
The main changes that have contributed the large scale deforestation are new industries.
Deforestation Def. & what it leads to
Deforestation is the cutting down of trees (sometimes illegally) simply for development purposes. This encourages leaching which is the loss of water-soluble plant nutrients from the soil. (environmental problem - soil worn out and washed away by rain - difficult to grow crops)
Consequences(&causes) of Deforestation (Medical)
- Some of the plants tribes use for medicine are disappearing.
- 1/4 of the medicines come from the rainforest (cure for cancer?) (Social)
- More sustainable –> not clearing large areas
Consequences(&causes) of Deforestation (Roads)
- Roads are crucial to development. (access)
- result - 3,300 miles of road (Transmazonian Highway) - built - Amazon
- Due to this access trees - cleared
Consequences(&causes) of Deforestation (Cattle Ranching)
- Primary Cause of deforestation.
- Responsible - 60% of deforestation.
- Trees : Cut down, Slashed then they burn the remaining vegetation.
- Remaining Vegetation then replaced w grass for cattle to graze on - often by large companies (MNC’s)
- Meat - sold to McDonald’s - profit.
Consequences(&causes) of Deforestation (Mining)
Iron Ore, Bauxite, Gold, Copper - make Brazilian economy richer
Waste & Chemicals - poison rivers
Use explosives and heavy machines
Large are is also cleared
What is the wood used from deforestation used to do?
Mahogany, Teak, Rosewood ↓ Expensive Furniture ↓ USA & Europe
Consequences(&causes) of Deforestation (HEP)
Animals & Tribes - pushed out (6000 people lost their lives) (Social problem - lead to violence)
Floods large areas of the rainforest {Want to achieve 125 dams in 15 years}
- Generates electricity
