PARAGRAPH 3 Flashcards
TS
Symbolism has been proficiently utilised within the text to position the reader to understand how the removal of colour has impacted the citizens right to choice and self expression; which later aids in communicating the idea that “one man’s utopia is another man’s dystopia” By thoroughly inspecting symbolic elements such as colour and panels

Also the apple itself symbolises the start of a new age and knowledge which is something we see Jonas gain as the book progresses; and the colour (red) symbolises power.
Fiona’s red hair is another symbolic example however in this instance the colour red does not symbolise power but rather love as Jonas is experiencing “stirrings” or deep romantic feelings for her which the community views as something that could have negative impacts on their “sameness”.

In addition the sled memory also holds an interesting symbolic meaning as sleds typically symbolise adventure and freedom but when you pair this element with the fact that the sled is also the colour red it’s symbolic meaning changes to being that courage is necessary when facing danger on an adventure. Courage has been mentioned twice in the novel in regard to Jonas. Firstly, when the chief elder proclaims that he will “need immense courage” when he begins his training as the receiver where he will face danger in the form of pain. Secondly, when the giver states that Jonas now “has the courage” which he will need on his journey to the next community where he will face danger in the form of starvation, exposure to the elements and hypothermia.
summary
like in chapter three where Jonas and Asher are playing catch with an apple that Jonas stole from the recreation area; when Jonas attempts to catch the apple, it turns from being a colourless grey sphere into a bright, red textured apple. His fixed gaze, scrunched eyebrows and his face turning dark grey are all symbolic of his confusion and shock to this new revelation called colour.

Whereas in comparison at the beginning of the novel where Jonas could only see in grey we see Jonas and others sound him cowering and conforming to their communities values and rules. An example is how they all have to use very precise language whenever they speak as the rules are very harsh on those who do choose to defy the council.
lead out
Symbolism is utilised by the illustrator and author to position readers to understand that having colour means having choice, having freedom, having self expression and creativity which is a right that none within the community are aware of. However living in a colourless world would mean that discrimination based of race or physical appearances would by non-existent which is why to some a colourless world is there dream utopia where everyone is equal, however to most the colourless world would is a dystopia as freedom, choice and self expression are too important.
