Jezebel + Anna relationship
The first female introduced in the poem is “Jezebel” who is a promiscuous biblical character who is seen as evil. Auden cleverly introduces the character of Anna quickly after the introduction of Jezebel to reflect how Anna is also a promiscuous character despite her innocent looks.
Quotes about Anna
“She looked as pure as a schoolgirl on her first communion day, but her kisses were like the best champagne when she gave herself away”. This quote enforces how Victor sees Anna as innocent because of her looks, however readers are made that this is not the truth through the word “when” which suggests that she is promiscuous as she kisses many men.
How Anna’s murder is foreshadowed
This effectively helps foreshadow the murder of Anna as Anna isn’t as innocent as Victor believes and he only wants to marry a woman who is pure and avoids sin. It also helps readers understand why Victor’s immediate reaction after hearing about Anna cheating on him were so outrageous.
