Dickens crafts the existence of “Ignorance” and “Want” as having a close tie with the abandonment of the poor in society. This reemphasises the idea that mankind need to collectively take responsibility for them as they are “Man’s”.

Apostrophe used in possessive form shows that they are metaphorically Scrooges children that he has exploited and as a result, must now take responsibility for
“Wolfish, scowling, yellow, meagre”
Semantic field of feral appearance and demonstrates that they are weak, malnourished and feeble
Ignorance
= the ignorance the upper class has towards the plight of the poor
= worse than Want as it offers a parallel to the Malthusian theory which is deeply entrenched in society
Want?
= representative of the selfishness they display and their uncharitable nature
