Paradise Lost IX ~ Social Flashcards
How did people perceive Adam’s concession of Eve’s wish to go out and “divide their labours” in the 17th Century?
Excessively meek
What would a typical modern day of Eve be on?
Praising Eve’s independence (in contrast to her needing to be controlled in 17th Century)
What was a popular opinion during the 17th Century on women?
They were inferior to men [normally perceived as wily or housewives]
What were Milton’s views on relationships and love?
After a relationship one had with the church, relationship was a chief source of either personal happiness or misery
Why does it seem like Milton favours the ‘feminine’ traits instead? (patience and humility)
He appears to criticise the ‘masculine’ virtues instead (self-assertiveness and will to power) [hence why he may have presented Adam’s fall as more severe or done out of choice]
