Paradigms Flashcards
What is a quantitative methodology?
Commonly associated with positivist and post-positivist paradigms
Interested in measurable outcomes
Interested in probability rather than proof ex: how probable is it that cigarette smoking leads to lung cancer?
What is qualitative methodology?
Interpretive/constructivist and critical/advocacy paradigms
Interested in describing or understanding phenomenon
Outcomes lead to theory development
What is mixed method?
Uses both qualitative and quantitative methods in order to maximize the strengths and reduce the limitations of those methods individually
Explanatory designs
Use qualitative approach to develop a greater understanding of the quantitative data
Can use quantitative approach to test a theory that emerges from the qualitative data
Which paradigm is associated with quantitative research?
positivist/post-positivist
what type of reasoning is used in quantitative research?
deductive reasoning
what is the goal of quantitative research?
to test and explore relationships among concepts
what is the outcome of a quantitative research?
accepts or rejects a proposed theory or hypothesis
what perspective of reality does quantitative research have?
reality is objective and universal
which paradigm is associated with qualitative research?
constructivist/interpretive
what type of reasoning is used in qualitative research?
inductive reasoning
what is the goal of qualitative research?
describe a situation and develop theories
what is the outcome of qualitative research?
illuminate a situation or concept and build theory
what is the perspective of reality in qualitative research?
reality is subjective
in which type of research is bias present?
bias is present only in qualitative research
which designs are used in quantitative research?
experimental designs
quasi-experimental designs
non-experimental designs (e.g. surveys)
