Logothetis (2001) Nature: Neurophysiological investigation of the basis of the fMRI signal

Logothetis studies the relationship between the measured fMRI signal and the underlying neural activity. They compared MUAs and LFPs (filtered from LFP signal with high/low pass filters) in visual cortex of monkeys with the measured BOLD signal. LFPs (signifying presynaptic or input activity) correlated more with the BOLD signal. They drove neurons in the visual cortex with a rotating checkerboard pattern which reversed every second to prevent adaptation.
