Q

What are the steps of making paper?

A

•softwood trees are cut down, and the bark is removed
•the wood is shredded into chippings
•the chippings are ground down or cooked in chemicals to extract the cellulose fibres
•this cellulose pulp is filtered squeezed bleached and pounded
•chemicals are added to change the opacity and absorbancy of the paper. This is called sizing
•the excess water and chemicals are drained by pushing the pulp through sets of rollers called calendars
•this is repeated until the pulp is fully dried
•it is then pressed to create a smooth finish
