Paper 3 key things to know Flashcards
Name the 3 methods of sampling and what they mean
Random- Non bias data- blindfold used or selected at random from hat- no prior knowledge
Stratified- Select 2 areas with prior knowledge of area and take data from both to compare
Systematic- Data taken in a regular way for example every 50m
Give examples of each of the 3 methods of sampling
Random- Lithology, Photos
Stratified- field sketch, place checks, cost benefit analysis
Systematic- beach profiles, Land use
What is Qualitative data?
Data is subjective, and based on opinions for example questionnaires and diary accounts
What is Quantitative data?
Factual and numerical based data to make graphs with for example beach profiles, cost benefit analysis and bipolar evaluation
What were our 3 hypothesis questions for Physical
1) Beach width increases with distance north from Torcross
2) Sediment size decreases with distance north from Torcross
3) Coastal protection increases with land value
What are the hypothesis questions for Human
As you move further away from the CBD….
1) the quality of the environment change
2) the type of people change
3) the proportion of land used for businesses and commercial use changes
What is the population of Torcross?
434
What is the population of Plymouth
256,384 (3210 per km2)
How much did the sea wall in slapton cost
£330,000
What were the 3 places we took data from in plymouth
CBD- City center
Inner City- Mutley
Sub-urbs- Hartley
What secondary data did we take into account
Google maps- structure of start bay
BGS map- british geological survey map to study physical processes
What was successful (can be said for both physical and human sections)
- Worked in groups to ensure non- bias data that everyone agreed on was collected
- backed up with secondary data
- steps taken to minimize bias
What could we improve on?
- Go to different areas of coast/ city to show more data
- Some groups had more time to do pilot studies so more pilot studies needed
- Only northern transect of Plymouth studied so go southern
- Only visited once in the year so go more times a year
What methods did we do to answer Physical Hypothesis
- Beach profiles (1)
- Lithology (2)
- Cost benefit analysis (3)
What methods did we do to answer Human Hypothesis
- Place check (1)
- Pedestrian Count (2)
- Land use survey (3)
