What is Ad-hoc?
A term used to describe informal and quick meetings between nation states.
What is the Clinton Doctrine?
The proposition that the best way to maintain stability in the areas that truly matter to the United States (like Western Europe) is to combat instability and human rights abuses.
What is the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR)?
An international convention to protect human rights and political freedoms in Europe.
What is the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR)?
An international court of the Council of Europe which interprets the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
What is ECOSOC?
UN body responsible for the maintenance of economic security, development and human rights.
What is global civil society?
Social movements and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) that highlight issues.
What is the General Assembly?
Contains all member states of the UN.
What is global governance?
Broad and complex process of decision making at a global level.
What are human rights?
Rights that people are entitled to by virtue of being human.
What is humanitarian intervention?
Military intervention carried out in pursuit of humanitarian rather than other objectives.
Who is the High Commissioner for Human Rights?
Person in overall charge of UN human rights actions and policies.
What are Intergovernmental Organisations (IGOs)?
A group of nation states formally working together on issues of mutual interest or to coordinate joint action.
What is the International Court of Justice (ICJ)?
Principal judicial organ of the United Nations.
What is the International Criminal Court (ICC)?
Organisation that prosecutes individuals for the international crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
What is International Law?
Law that governs states and other international actors.
What are International Treaties?
Agreements between nation states that bind them to certain rules, agreements or standards.
What are International tribunals?
Organisations set up to prosecute individuals in specific states for their crimes against humanity, genocide and war crimes.
What is Libya?
Country in North Africa where the UN’s intervention after the overthrow of Gaddafi largely failed.
What is a (UN) mission?
Temporary part of the UN set up to deal with specific issues.
What is Neo-colonisation?
The imposition of economic and governmental models on countries to increase influence of certain countries.
What are Non-governmental organisations (NGOs)?
Any non-profit, voluntary citizens’ group organised on a local, national or international level - perform a variety of service and humanitarian functions, bring citizens concerns to governments, advocate and monitor policies and encourage political participation.
What is the P5?
The term used to describe USA, China, UK, France and Russia as permanent members of the UNSC.
What is Political Global Governance?
The area of global organisation concerned with the behaviour of nation states within the ISS.
What is the responsibility to protect?
Global political commitment, endorsed by the UNGA, in order to address its four key concerns to prevent genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity.
