Paper 2 Waves Flashcards
Period
The time taken in seconds for one complete wave to pass a point
Peak
Top of the wave
Trough
Bottom of the wave
Velocity
Velocity = frequency x wavelength (the wave equation)
Frequency
The number of cycles per second. Measured in hertz (Hz)
Wavelength
the distance between successive crests of a wave, especially points in a sound wave or electromagnetic wave. Always measured in metres
Amplitude
Height of the wave
Displacement
Distance from the equilibrium
Transverse Waves
The oscillation of a transverse wave are perpendicular to the direction in which the wave transfers
Longitudinal waves
Oscillations are parallel to the direction of travel
Angle of reflection
Angle of incidence
Reflection
When a wave bounces off an object. For example light on a mirror
Refraction
When a wave enters an object with a higher density, causing it to change direction and slow down.
