Paper 2 - Topics 6-10 (Year 11) Flashcards
How do you calculate the mean rate of reaction? (2)
Quantityofreactantused / Time taken
OR
Quantityofproductformed / Timetaken
What are the factors which affect the rates of chemical reaction?
The concentrations of reactants in solution, the pressure of reacting gases, the surface area of solid reactants, the temperature and the presence of catalysts.
What is the minimum amount of energy needed for particles to react called?
The Activation energy.
What is collision theory?
Chemical reactions can occur only when reacting particles collide with each other and with sufficient energy.
What are the factors which increase the rate of reactions?
Increasing the concentration of reactants in solution, the pressure of reacting gases, and the surface area of solid reactants increases the frequency of collisions.
Why does increasing the temperature of a reaction increase the rate of reaction?
The frequency of collisions and makes the collisions more energetic, and so increases the rate of reaction.
How do catalysts increase the rates of reaction?
They provide a different pathway for the reaction that has a lower activation energy.
